European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
