Her Royal Highness's Annual Yuletide Service of Carols Honours Unsung Heroes

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her annual festive musical service at Westminster Abbey, with guests including members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have supported their local areas.

The sizable congregation will hear a selection of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from actors such as Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Focusing on Kindness and Compassion

The focus of the service, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday afternoon, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.

In the audience are Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose child passed away from a tumour, and who founded an organisation, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to aid parents with a child with a terminal illness.

"The time, care and compassion you give, often quietly and unspoken, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an remarkable change to the lives of others," Her Royal Highness stated in a letter ahead of the concert.

Carefully Paced Reappearance

The Princess of Wales is continuing her own gradual return to the public eye after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, recently giving her first public speech for two years, in which she discussed recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Musical Talent and Access

Those coming to the Abbey will enjoy performances from talented youth performers supported by the Future Talent organisation, established in part by the former royal to increase availability of music lessons.

Carys Wood, aged 18, who performs on the trumpet and is from southwest Wales, has been supported by the charity, with funding assisting with musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "amazing" to be taking part in tonight's service.

"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," she stated. She is now enrolled at the Royal Academy of Music, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to develop their musical skills.

Generations Gathering

Her younger sibling Eliza, aged 11, who is a euphonium player, will likewise attend the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many important people," she said.

Within the audience will be individuals spanning multiple eras.

That will feature young Saphia Turner, nine, recipient of a prize for youthful altruism, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to generate funds for local food charities.

Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment

The Abbey has been adorned with custom-created holiday decorations, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett helping to make them.

Taking to the stage will be recording artist Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a Cornish sea shanty group, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the opportunity to perform was "a dream come true."

This annual carol service will be broadcast on television on December 24th.
